Designing Spaces for Dementia

Designing Spaces for Dementia

At Tarkett we are passionate about designing people friendly spaces. With this in mind we are committed to understanding the needs of people who interact with our floors in all sorts of different environments. From education to healthcare to aged care and workplace our technical and design teams are committed to creating specific products that work for every setting.

Aged care facilities come with very specific needs as residents navigate age related changes. Design of spaces and selection of colours become highly important to keep residents engaged. Residents suffering dementia or vision impairments need clear and easy visual ques to help aid in navigation of space such as contrast between floors and walls. Selecting products that reduce the amount of ambient noise in a room can drastically improve interactions with those suffering hearing loss, making it easier for staff, family and residents to engage. The unique needs of staff in facilities also need to be a key consideration in the design phase, creating a safe and functional workplace allows staff to provide the best care possible.

By designing and specifying spaces that address the effects of aging, facilities are taking big steps towards ensuring the wellbeing for both residents and staff.
